2011级学生代表刘娅岚在2010级毕业典礼上的讲话
It’s an honor to be here today to address phbs’s distinguished faculty, proud parents, dear friends, and most importantly the class of 2013.
Today marks the distinct and impressive academic achievement for this class. So please everyone join me in giving our warmest congratulations to the class of 2013.
Graduation is exciting; graduation means you can step out of the ivory tower, over the threshold and into the real world. Graduation means you can make money and truly start independent life. And for us non graduates, graduation also means freedom by which we do not have to be “tortured” by the examinations such as FSA or Real option, and we will not be “forced” to be here, listening to my boring speech.
Graduation means a lot, so is our three-year PHBS life.
P stands for Paradise. PHBS is the paradise for those who desire to sharpen their technical skills and enter into the finance world. We are so lucky to have so many dedicated leaders, hardworking administration staff and excellent faculty members (you may think of some handsome Korean guy). It is not only a paradise for “studyholics”, but also a paradise for those who want to find their Mr. Right or Miss. Right. I do not work for any paparazzi, but as far as I know, there are more than 12 couples in grade one, 10 couples in grade two and 9 couples in grade 3. Yeah, PHBS is a paradise for study and for life.
If P means Paradise, then what about H? at first thought, H may stands for “high level, international and high standard” or the so called 高端洋气上档次. Yes, before we came here, we imagined the seemingly high level, fancy life of those bankers in the Wall Street: flying from city to city, working with an apple notebook, carrying a Starbuck, living in five star or even seven star hotels, dressing in expensive and famous brand business suits. However, it’s too simple and to naïve. If such a superficial imagination and understanding of PHBS was what we had before we came here, we may be justified. Now, as we are exploring through PHBS and have explored, we come to understand that this H here (the “H” from “PHBS”) probably means Happiness, happiness in our own definition. Although the world is too eager to give us a set of criteria of success and happiness, we do have to decide for ourselves what constitutes our own happiness. It’s in PHBS that we understand personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. It’s in PHBS that we know our qualifications, our CV, are not our whole life. It’s in PHBS that we learn that life may be difficult and complicated and we have to form our own set of values and views of the world in order to truly live an independent and abundant life. Such humility will enable us to survive its vicissitudes and such wisdom may help us to find its real happiness.
Now, what does B stand for? We may have thought, B means battle, as its put, the business field is like a battlefield, and the relationship and contact between business people is just mimic warfare. But, in PHBS, this is not the case. Here, B means Brothers and sisters. (don’t think in other way, it’s not 拉友 or 基友). Think about it, we may never have such an opportunity to have so many intensive courses, sitting together and making notes together, go to the washrooms together and preparing for examinations together; We may never have such an opportunity to live in such a “small” dorm where our distance between each other is less than one meter. We may never have such an opportunity to study cases and do group discussion at 12pm into the night along the mirror lake or in the canteen and we may never have such an opportunity to live a life of “eating, sleeping, doing cases”(that is “吃饭睡觉打case”). Such life shared together, difficulties overcame together, and champions achieved together will be our most precious memory, always fresh and fragrant.
Last, what does S stand for? You might think I would choose the word Success. Not really so. Of course, being in the top 1 university in China is viewed by the majority as a huge success in life. We are indeed the lucky few who have the opportunity to receive such an extraordinary education. However, for us PHBS students, who are looking for a greater success, this S here means a Start. Studying in PHBS opens many doors for us. As we open these doors, we are making new starts which lead to new journeys. In order to travel longer in this new journey and get to a better place, we need our own qualifications and capacities. In this case, S may also mean Self-help, self-control, and self discipline, which we have gained through our military training, through our intensive and torturing courses, and through our class meetings where Prof. Wen Hai would always warn us: “Don’t leave early!” or “hei, boys and girls, be self disciplined and do not play with your phones! Look at the speaker!” In addition, S here may also mean Support. We PHBSers are brothers and sisters. No matter how cruel the reality is, how complicated life is, the support from one another here will always be our strength and sunshine. No matter how soon you class of 2013 are leaving this campus, no matter how far away you may go, how long we will be apart, you will always be our senior brothers and sisters and we hope you can always find free time to travel back and pay this school a visit.
So today, I can wish you nothing better than friendships, your own success and happiness. As S stands for a start, so is today: today’s graduation ceremony is not a period, but a comma. We sincerely hope that this good start can bring you through the journey of life, to a better and more beautiful place.
Thank you very much.
