汇丰商学院教师代表孙磊在2013级新生开学典礼上的讲话
Dear colleagues, guests, and students! Good evening!
I am Lei Sun. It is my great honor to represent the faculty group to share some thoughts with you, especially our first year students.
14 Years ago, when I was a freshman at the opening ceremony at Math School, PKU, frankly speaking, I was too excited to pay much attention to speeches. But today, I still hope you can take in something afterwards.
When I was told to make this speech from Professor Chang, I was wondering what I’d like to share mostly with you, what I could have done better if I were fourteen years younger. I have consolidated my thoughts into the following four points for your incoming university life.
Firstly, to make more friends! Not until you start working will you realize how easy it is to make true friends (including boyfriends and girlfriends) in your campus life. You’re surrounded by a lot of other like-minded people from your age group, most of whom are open to meeting others. Generally this type of relationship is long lasting. They can further provide career network after graduation. Not to mention Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer in Harvard and Microsoft, and its Chinese version Huateng(Pony) Ma and Zhidong Zhang in SZU and Tencent, I have some university friends, who are in close touch with me after graduation and inspire me in various aspects. I deem them a big treasure in my life.
My second advice for you is to have more experiences. I would say it is probably the last chance for you to have many experiences but with a small transition cost. The more you experience, the more you know about yourself. Once you have an experience, you may not necessarily know what you like, however the good thing is you know what you dislike. Here as a PHBS student,
You have a lot more chances to participate in different student associations.
You have a lot more chances to intern in different sectors of financial industry.
You also have a lot more chances to be exchanged to other universities, other countries.
I strongly encourage you to gain your firsthand experience. Please remember it’s you who decide your own future.
Thirdly, as a business school student, I hope you can behave professionally, not only in your dressings or your CVs and PPTs, but also in a lot more intangible. (like how you think, how you behave) To me, professionalism is a number of traits that combine to form a professional image.
A professional is someone who sees opportunity, not someone who seeks excuses that something cannot be done.
A professional is someone who has understanding into relevant issues in his field and be able to articulate solutions.
A professional is someone who can communicate his insight or ideas effectively to others.
A professional is also someone who is reliable and responsible, with higher morality and credibility which is essential in financial industry.
Please notice inappropriate language, appearance, or subjects have as much to do with damaging a professional image as anything else
Last but not least, please do not be short-sighted.
In financial market, if you compare the return of stock with that of bond every day, you will find bond may be superior in more than half of the days. However, if you check your account once a year, now the stock dominates most of the time.
So do not care too much about fluctuation in short horizon. Once you have a goal, please be determined. We do expect you to have high aspirations.
I may give you an example. Mathematician Yitang Zhang, who is also our alumni, enrolled in PKU in 1978, just one year later than our dean Professor Wen Hai. But he was not well recognized until early this year for his extraordinary contribution in number theory. He is probably the mathematician of the year in the world. His persistent efforts have finally paid off. This example may be too extreme. But I would encourage you to lay a solid foundation and it will spur with long accumulation.
Our knowledge is increasing, but our remaining time is decreasing. So please put your feet on the ground and run!
Finally, on behalf of our faculty, welcome on board to join our family!
