汇丰商学院新生代表姬青在2013级新生开学典礼上的讲话
Distinguished leaders and guests, dear faculty members, all the staff and my fellow students,
Good evening.
I am Ji Qing, a double major master student in management and financial engineering. It’s my great honor to be here and give a speech as the representative of all the new students entering Peking University HSBC business school. I believe, at this exciting moment, as we are all gathered here today, that every one of us has a mixture of feelings. We have not only deep memories of the past four years, but also longing and curiosity for the next three years of post-graduate life. I believe that some of you may already have a clear career plan, and some of you may feel confused facing a new environment. Luckily, we are a family, we can fight together.
Are you ready to accept the change in your identity? It doesn’t just mean that we start again as juniors and yet a few months ago we were senior students. I mean the new identity, as a graduate student.
As for me, I do see the changes in my thoughts. I once disliked my major of finance, and sometimes I even hated it. I thought of economic theories to be boring and cold. It is too rational to have humanistic care for people. However, after in-depth study, I realized my naivety. Ration and humanistic care are not incompatible. On the contrary, ration makes life easier and it pushes forward human civilization. With deeper insight, I could learn with passion during my graduate life. On the other hand, as we become graduate students, we are much closer to setting foot to society. I realize that it is time to prepare myself for further development. I begin to think over my career path again. I said ‘again’, because when I was undergraduate, I thought of it only to prepare for my interview. I talked about it to prove my passion and insight. However, I thought over it to learn about myself.
They say that the new identity of graduate students means matureness. But what does matureness mean?
I think that matureness means managing time efficiently. I once could not help refreshing my weibo every few minutes. And I would not miss any information of the IDs I followed. As a result, updating controlled my time. I refreshed and refreshed, and my textbooks were still open there. I sat in the library but I felt guilty. Then here came the vicious cycle. Now I’m still not good at managing my time, but I’m trying to develop the good habit.
Now let’s return to the topic of changes in identity. Yes, we may know ourselves better and we may even be fascinated by our dreaming job. We may manage our time efficiently and we may feel encouraged when we live each day to the fullest.
Another thing I want to share with you is about accumulation. My senior sister inspired me about it. Internship and certificate exams seem to be focus of attention for our business school students. But it’s easy to be blind. However, reading books could help us accumulate knowledge which we could benefit for the whole life. Experiencing a different life is another way of accumulation. This is why I stick to the dual master degree of National University of Singapore. I believe four months’ life abroad would enrich my experience, which I could not get from internship and certificates. And exchange programs of PHBS also attract me a lot.
I’m proud to be a member of PHBS, because we are united. I was so moved by what our seniors said in yesterday’s recruitment talk——The people around you is your future. I was moved by the spirit to share. It makes me feel excited to make friends with people with a common goal. I believe that we could carry forward the spirits of PHBS, we could work hard to retain our honor and dignity. We could fight together to win social recognition and respect with our genuine talent.
Finally, I wish everyone a wonderful and happy life on campus! Thank you!
